Now, there's just one thing that is a little frustrating when using
it...for some reason PSPP keeps truncating my filenames...so that a long
file name like 'recoded datasheet 9Sep13' is saved as something like
'recode ~.sav'  This is not good it's important to name files
properly...so the truncation doesn't help in identifying what the file
is. Can this be addressed?

Unfortunately  you didn't state which Operating System you used. I guess it is some MSWindows version. In that case it has nothing todo with PSPP but with the way your disk are formatted or the tools you use to view it. PSPP supports long filenames on MSWindows.
Just have a look if you can create long filenames with editors or soemthing like that.

If longfilenames work for other tools on the same computer ande the same drive, please describe the exact steps after which you have these short filenames.
