That sounds great. The tables generated with the command "DISPLAY DICTIONARY" 
in PSPP are much better than those generated with SPSS. The disadvantage of 
using this command is that it shows all the information variables available, 
and that's a problem when working with eg more than 100 variables.

Moreover, due to disuse had completely forgotten about the existence of the 
command "CODEBOOK" in SPSS. The advantage of this command is that it can 
generate custom reporting tables (variable or file information) previously 
selected variables, and basic statistics.

I think the approach you want to give to the display of the "utility variables" 
is most appropriate.
