gettext-0.15 creates bad gettext-tools/examples/Makefile

I am on a Mac 10.4.  I type "configure" -- everything completes but  
the Makefile in examples has a bad line in it.  Here is a small  
nippet.  The bad line number is 1442

distdir: $(DISTFILES)
        $(am__remove_distdir)
        mkdir $(distdir)
$(MAKE) distdir1             <<< bad line
        $(mkdir_p) $(distdir)/. $(distdir)/../../build-aux $ 
(distdir)/../../gettext-runtime/m4 $(distdir)/../../m4

I don't have a clue what else to include to help you guys out.  I  
happy to help if possible to send me questions if you have any.
