Hello Dan,

You wrote to me regarding this matter:

Thanks for the explanation and the solution provided, and sorry that it is
not related with grep and has to do with shell globbing.
Unfortunately, this solution doesn't work in my directory, because I have
probably very big files and grep just fails after a very long time
searching (2 minutes) with this message:

address@hidden public_html]# grep -i -r i80word .
*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid next size (fast): 0x08ae0e00 ***
Aborted

Thanks for providing this information. It looks like a bug in grep,
and thus I think its maintainer wants to know about it.

Could you please write to the list the output of
 grep --version

and roughly the size of the files in that directory tree? Maybe also
the operating system you use. The maintainer may have more questions
about this issue.

Thanks,
Ralf

Hello, Ralf.

Yes, of course, I am happy if I can help. I didn't dear speaking about this, but also thought that it was not really normal. I am happy you catched it ;-)

address@hidden public_html]# grep --version
grep (GNU grep) 2.5.1

address@hidden public_html]# gdu .
2521140 . (this is 2.5 Gbytes)

The size of the files is very different, it varies a lot.
I cannot tell you up to how much it goes, but if you ave a command to suggest I will try it.
I am using CentOS 4 (latest updates applied), on an i386 system.

Kind regards,
Daniel
