'valgrindtests' would be a hack.

'valgrind-support-for-tests' would have the same problem.

'test-support-with-valgrind' would reflect the meaning, but is a bit long.

What did this naming attempt to achieve?

This is fixed now.

What about the shell-based gnulib tool? Or should I consider that one deprecated?

So, IMO, there is no need to rename the module any more.
