It certainly is, and we recently made almost exactly this change in the
Git repo - see [1]. It has been in the 1.9.x pre-releases since end
March, and will be in 2.0.
I also just cherry-picked it to the 1.8.x branch, so it'll be in 1.8.8,
if and when we do that.
