lilypond-bin has version <not found>

Dear Lilypond developper,

First of all I am very happy with all the work and effort
you do to have lilypond working on what ever platform.

At this moment I am struggling trying to get Lilypond 2.1.0
and/or 1.6.6 working on my Suse 8.2 (kernel 2.4.20).
After installing potrace and autotrace I was almost there
but when I start /usr/local/bin/lilypond file.ly it comes 
with: 
lilypond (GNU LilyPond) 2.1.0
lilypond: error: `lilypond-bin --version ' failed (127)
lilypond: error: The error log is as follows:
sh: line 1: lilypond-bin: command not found


When I create a softlink (ln -s lilypond lilypond-bin)
I get the following:

lilypond (GNU LilyPond) 2.1.0
lilypond: error: Binary /usr/local/bin/lilypond-bin has version <not
found>, looking for version 2.1.0

Do you know what I am doing wrong ?
