Boot failed

I'm trying to resize the partition of toshiba notebook
running windows 98. The notebook does not have a cdrom
or I would use partition magic. So I've decided to
give gnu's parted a go. I've downloaded and created
the partboot and partroot floppies, using my Linux
desktop. However, evertime I attempt to boot the
partboot disk, I get a Boot Failed message (I wish I
could be a liitle more specific, but that's all its
telling me). Does anyone have any ideas on how to get
around this or some other way to resize the
parititions. I cannot lose the information on the
drive because the laptop is not mine.
Thanks in advance,
Michael
