Thanks.  It took a while before I understood what this <since> in 
git-format-patch should be.  And then have ssmtp not override the 
From: address from git-send-email -- totally counterintuitive: 
commenting out rewriteDomain and setting FromLineOverride=YES.

It should have worked now.  (I can't see the mails myself as 
Fastmail filters out duplicates.)
