Hmm, I have now fixed the fifo bug which also affected non-Windows systems.  
Not so sure about the Windows file seek workaround though.  Assuming that this 
bug still exists, could I please have an updated bug report and patch against 
the latest version on ftp://alpha.gnu.org?

        patch-2.6.1.111-3c77.tar.gz
