That is an idea which is completely foreign to me, and I think to the
GNU project, and indeed most software in the wild.   In fact, in  GNU,
and in GNU/Linux there is no such thing as a "file extension" .  That is
a concept which existed in early DOS systems.

Obviously there are common conventions which we follow.   For example, C
source code normally resides in files whose name ends in ".c", wheras
C++ files end in ".cc" just to name a few.    But these are merely
convensions - Editors, and compilers will work quite happily on C file
whose name is "slkj?1ou,y+:" (although gcc will need to be explicitly
told what type of compilation to do).   The only counter example to this that I
can think of was java, whose compiler insisted on a .java ending.
