I could file a bug report for lua-posix (official package), but would need some
evidence for this statement

Yes, please do (I'm also the maintainer of luaposix upstream).

done, see https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/41437

Phew, thought I was going crazy for a moment there! LOL Well, I'd still quite
like to find it and fix it, but it doesn't manifest on my Mac development
machine
with -j4 (my usual setting), so it would be a great help if you could show me
the
relevant lines from a terminal capture so I can figure out where the race
condition is.

Cheers,

I pushed a new build log to http://hastebin.com/ibafebubox, using make
--debug=vj.
AFAIS the build of zz.1 works (as zz.1 exists).

I think the relevant lines are nearly at the end.
File 'doc/.ldocs' does not exist.
        Considering target file 'doc'.
File 'doc' does not exist. # why "file doc"? Should be a
directory.
Looking for an implicit rule for 'doc'.
Trying pattern rule with stem 'doc'.
         Trying implicit prerequisite 'doc,v'.
Trying pattern rule with stem 'doc'.
         Trying implicit prerequisite 'RCS/doc,v'.
Trying pattern rule with stem 'doc'.
         Trying implicit prerequisite 'RCS/doc'.
Trying pattern rule with stem 'doc'.
         Trying implicit prerequisite 's.doc'.
Trying pattern rule with stem 'doc'.
         Trying implicit prerequisite 'SCCS/s.doc'.
No implicit rule found for 'doc'.
Finished prerequisites of target file 'doc'.
        Must remake target 'doc'.

That fails.
If it is relevant: I have gnumake 4.0 and gcc 4.9.1.

Best Regards
Stefan
