I have some experience with the brick road of this things, as an
end-user, not a graphics expert. I would say that it is not just a
matter of being “GNU Linux-libre” compatible, but rather depending on
how each thing was built and on having the full graphical stack observe
that in the right way (kernel + kernel driver/module + kernel firmware +
Mesa + Xorg/X11 + Xorg/X11 driver/module + graphical session manager).
To give an example, while my server computer (Dell Inspiron i15
3583-D5XP) used to have graphical environment with 3D and audio while
using Trisquel 9 and updated kernel from Jason Self (jsself, jxself), in
Hyperbola 0.3.1 it doesn't even have audio, nor graphics without 3D.
In my example above I can only use it with terminal. I'm not a
developer, but I found out that instructions to use insmod or modprobe
won't work if the given module's “alias” properties don't match your
device's “modalias”. I have yet to find a way to force arbitrary alias
matching for existing modules (alias creation doesn't seem to work),
which I think is the right solution instead of hunting for blind “insmod
or modprobe” commands.
I have another computer, this time for work, which I faced similar
issues, although both audio and video work fine (with 3D enabled), I
can't explicitly tell Xorg/X11 to use Nouveau, instead I have to let it
pick it up automatically otherwise it segfaults. Hunting potential cause
of the message led me to believe that it was a problem with the way
Nouveau was built in Hyperbola, while again: Nouveau works fine if you
do not choose it explicitly in the Xorg.conf and related files.
