Wow,
You guys have done very, very nice work on this!
I have been wanting to do an article for Linux Journal on GNU Step for
while now, but I think you have a great start here. It might be better if
there were writers who are members of the source crew to do the article.
Originally, I was thinking of writing something that demonstrates:
- moving source from NeXTSTEP/OPENSTEP to test GNU Step (perhaps from the
Emerald CD sources)
- developing applications with a working snapshot of Gorm
- how a developer could use GNU Step as a the multiplatform solution to
Mac OS/X
Finally, my pet project: getting GNU Step applications built for a PDA
like the iPAQ.
People look at me strangely when I mention this, since the alternatives
include the BlackDown JDK, PocketLinux, Sun's KVM, Gtk, Qt, FLTK, and
Motif. Why would someone want to go with a rare API to do the frameworks
and GUI?
My reasons would include:
- it is elegantly implemented and it uses Objective C
- it has a solid foundation
- the development environment is very nice
- it has the Java like capabilities of distributed objects and
introspection with the performance of C language code.
- Apple is using it, so unless in a couple of weeks there is some
announcement of an Apple PDA development environment, there is a
completely unclaimed niche that would be great for GnuStep.
Anyways, congratulations on this.
If you are interested in doing an article on this, please let me know. I
would like to avoid bumping heads with you on this. If not, I would love
to go ahead with it myself.
The one advantage I can see to having an outsider like myself write the
article is that I can toot the GnuStep horn louder without having to be
as modestly bashful as would be expected of the orginators.
