If using back-art, you _need_ to set the fonts to use.

If you're using the Gentoo ebuilds, you can find a "convenience" 
script in /usr/GNUstep/System/Tools/Gentoo ... there are scripts there 
for a handful of packages.  Edit them if you wish, or run directly.  
They just call the "defaults" command, which you should learn to love.
