To pickup the Ruby example, I'm not aware of any "killer app" Ruby or Rails provides.
Just to clarify, Rails _is_ Ruby's killer app. Rails is what propelled Ruby onto the shelves of every bookstore I can think of; it's what made people take a closer look at Ruby.
That's what GNUstep needs. We need something like Rails that makes people take notice of this great framework and environment that we have. Obviously, all the other issues (I'm one of the people working on theming, I'm sure there are people interested in porting and packaging) are important... but in the end, the apps are what it all comes down to.
