Just wondering which one I should use the build the Slackware
packages? I ran into some extra time to poke around with what

The best is Cairo, since it is the only one to support windows with
alpha channels (I think - this may have been implemented in art now).
The most stable is art. I've been using Cairo for a bit over a year,
and not had any issues with it for more than six months (and only
minor issues before then).
Note that you can include multiple back ends in the same package. The
FreeBSD port builds all three unless you specify otherwise, letting
you select at run time. I would recommend including art and cairo,
enable cairo by default, and include instructions for switching to art
if people encounter problems.
