Did you source the GNUstep.sh or GNUstep.csh script?

if bash is your shell (given you installed GNustep in /usr):

. /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh

if you use csh:

source /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/GNUstep.csh
