I cannot comment on the rest of your problem, but this warning should go away if you recompile gui and back. If this message still shows up, then you have specified the version of back in your .GNUstepDefaults file. This is never a good idea. If you want to test different backends just use the short name ("back", "cairo", "art", "xlib"). The current version number should be 019.
