I've been a bit leery of git submodules,  in part because of the way they
naturally result in detached heads,  and not symbolic (tag) references.
 
Maybe that's been fixed since they were first introduced.
 
However,  I was going to suggest using them if/when co-ordinated commits
between base and gui;  maybe having all the core libs in one repository
as Fred suggests would be better (and workable).
