[DotGNU]What IS .NET, really?

Just what functionality are you planning on producing?

I have not been able to make much sense out of the
.NET noise.  MS's material seems like total giberish
to me.  And the things that do make sense seem to
already be available, if not used that much.  

Can someone point me to some solid, none PR, material
about just what you intend to clone?
