It gives users access to a lot of applications that we
don't have to produce. If you check the document

you'll see a list of services that we could connect
to. PayPal, different Yahoo! services, mail accounts
etcetera. The point is to use stuff that's already out
there and thereby make the platform more valuable to
users.
Why would anyone want to connect to a service through
DotGNU/Jabber tomorrow that they can connect to on the
web today? Because you can tell all the DotGNU/Jabber
services to use a certain bank account when you pay
for something, store a document in a certain storage,
search the web with a certain search etcetera
etcetera. Today you have to tell the computer
specifically every time you use the services. Tomorrow
you don't:-) It's like being a returning Amazon
customer. They know your preferences and arrange their
world accordingly.
