It looks like Verizon threw together a Visual Basic
app to solve their immediate circuit tracking problems.
Then they compiled it to run on the .NET runtime and
what-not.  It was probably just a case of VB lying
around when they needed the problem solved and so
that's what they used.

Microsoft will no doubt hype this.  But it isn't unusual
for system integrators to use whatever they have to
hand to solve an emergency.  If this had happened
2 years ago, they probably would have thrown it
together using Java, and Sun would be hyping it.

The real test of .NET will be end-user apps on the
ground, not quick-fire solutions to one-off vertical
problems.  Anything can be used for one-offs.  That's
always been the case.
