You are quite right that criticizing Linus in public is unlikely to
convince him to change his mind.  I don't think anything is likely to
change his mind in general, but perhaps he might agree to run a CVS
repository that is synced automatically with his Bitkeeper repository.
I would expect that people have already asked him to do this and
he has already refused, but I don't know for certain.  Do you want
to find out?

Once people have given that a reasonable try, the only thing left is
to criticize him in public in the hope of influencing *other people's*
views.

In general, criticizing people in public for their actions that affect
others is not a shameful thing.  It is legitimate, normal, and
laudable.  I've criticized non-free software, its development and its
use, for years.  On www.stallman.org you can see me criticize
many other things.
