Sacrificing correctness is a kind-of retreat, justified only when a
better solution is not at hand.

Sure. But I started this thread not because cc-mode was slow, but because specific design choices led to inconsistent fontification. It'd be a shame for it to result in changes that made cc-mode even more inconsistent.
