What are the main issues? The ones I am familiar with is the broken
versioning system and the fact that new package versions are created for
(roughly) every commit by default, and that the "stable" variation is
the alternative. I also remember the conversation about MELPA including
packages that promote and/or depend on non-free software, but that was
already ruled out.

What thread was that discussed in? I just checked the archives, and
there were multiple conversations that could be related to this.
