It is certainly a very minor disadvantage, as it's always been accurate
for me.

But shouldn't contributors be expected to read CONTRIBUTE anyhow?  If
someone does not read the CONTRIBUTE file, he will not know to add
entries to NEWS, to write correctly formatted commit messages, and so
on.  A list of checks done on formatting does not seem as important as
some of the other topics covered "somewhere near the end of the
CONTRIBUTE document."
