There were two things requested, and one of them was related to test
repeatability (which then also requires not writing anything to
eln-cache).

It's not a matter of specific issues with native code, but a general
principle -- you should be able to run the same test twice and have it
trigger all the same code paths.  That's just a general maintenance
principle.
