As I started that thread, and as I am currently using a compile of
cvs head between when Dave added that code and when Richard commented
it out, I have to second the question.

The concensus of the thread looked to me that it was OK to use the
UnicodeData.txt file.

The code does exactly what was suggested in the thread.  And w/o even
trying to distribute a copy of UnicodeData.txt -- it merely lets one
use a copy one already has.

The only issue I have with it is that the ()-ized info C-x= prints in
the *MEssage* buffer is elipsed out after the word file, so you have
to use C-uC-x= to see the U+XXXX code for the character.
