Perhaps I'm not running the right thing, because

   C-u C-h a grep RET

Strange. With freshly bootstrapped CVS, when I do

emacs-21.3.50 -q

and then:

C-u C-h a grep RET

I get:

find-grep-dired M-x find-grep-dired RET
Command: Find files in DIR containing a regexp REGEXP and start
  Dired on output.
grep <menu-bar> <tools> <grep>
Command: Run grep, with user-specified args, and collect output in a
  buffer.
grep-find M-x grep-find RET
Command: Run grep via find, with user-specified args COMMAND-ARGS.
grep-mode M-x grep-mode RET ;; My remark: Here it is.
  Command: (not documented)
grep-tree M-x grep-tree RET
Command: Grep for REGEXP in FILES in directory tree rooted at DIR.

Sincerely,

Luc.
