How about adding data to the `memory exhausted' signal to say what the
cause was if you can't get a gdb backtrace?  I've seen people confused
by this in the past, not realizing they were actually falling foul of
internal addressing.

The Boehm GC give you some tools to trace memory allocation and
pointers keeping data live when they shouldn't, but I don't know how
easy they are is to use.
