Sadly no. I'll try to keep it around next time until I hear back from

Okay. Will do.

Just as a total stab in the dark, I saw somewhere something about a
bug involving EDIFF (and a crash I think) and something to do with a
custom modeline. I read it and it didn't sound like my problem but
many of my files that I'm ediffing do contain slightly weird looking
modelines, like this:

\modeline{-*- mode: pbs:book;  transient-mark-mode: t -*-}

I mention it only on the off chance that'll spark an aha! momment for
someone.
