mule-diag tells for 21.3.50: Coding system of the terminal: mule-utf-8
and for 22.0.50: Coding system of the terminal: iso-latin-1  -- because 
of loading disp-table!

How can I determine that? I think on Saturday I did the last update for 
22.0.50. 21.3.50 from Fink is packed in an archive *-20041117.tar.gz -- 
could be the date of check-out!

When I set (set-terminal-coding-system 'utf-8) deliberately for 22.0.50 
I can see the March's month name in German correct as 'März' and in the 
mode-line abbreviated as 'Mär' -- and the HELLO buffer is almost 
complete (Arabic, Hindi, Kannada, Mayalam, Tamil are empty -- although 
some of the glyphs in the scripts Hindi, Kannada, Mayalam, Tamil are 
displayed when asked with C-u C-x = in the *Help* buffer and probably 
all of them are shown in mini-buffer!). Which is better than with 
21.3.50 which additionally cannot display CJK glyphs too.
