ediff: Error during redisplay

Symptoms:

Using ediff, I get very often (i.e. on every region at least
twice) in *Message*:

Error during redisplay: (search-failed \([\][\]\)\([(|)]\)\(\?:\)?)

It does not seem to be affecting the functionality, but it
doesn't quite seem correct either.
