I checked this with an Emacs provided by nqmacs.sf.net which is from
end of January and with one from crasseux.com which is from
mid-April. Both showed this behavior.

That'll teach me to report bugs based on outdated binaries. To my
excuse I can say that I am using Windows only for gaming purposes and
therefore haven't had the development tools installed, but
nevertheless wanted to help a user who reported the bug on an AUCTeX
mailing list.

Okay, installed MSYS/MinGW, compiled a current checkout, and I don't
see the problem either. So it seems to be fixed.
BTW, the configure.bat script told me to execute `gmake' in order to
build. But actually `make bootstrap' was required. Maybe the script
could be a bit more verbose about this.
