edebug doesn't always work

Sometimes when I run `edebug-defun', the echo area displays
a messages that indicated that the function has been
instrumented, but then edebug does not take over when the
function is called.
I don't know what causes this behavior, and I'm looking for
suggestions. The only workaround I've found so far is to
restart Emacs (or to do all my debugging "by hand")!
In GNU Emacs 22.0.50.20 (powerpc-apple-darwin7.9.0, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll
