grep slows to a crawl

I don't have an emacs -Q recipe for this.
I'm using a native Windows build with Cygwin grep (and bash shell).
When I launch a simple Emacs `grep' it starts out fast and then
progressively slows to a crawl. I don't see this problem with the
2005-06-26 CVS snapshot I have, or with Emacs 20 or 21.3.1.
In GNU Emacs 22.0.50.1 (i386-mingw-nt5.1.2600)
of 2006-03-20 on W2ONE
X server distributor `Microsoft Corp.', version 5.1.2600
configured using `configure --with-gcc (3.4) --cflags -Id:/g/include'
