It seems to me that es_mpiexec of ESPResSo 3.1.1 uses the bashism
">&/dev/null" in two places and, thus, does not work under a plain sh.
Either you manually remove the ampersands before the /dev/null or change
the shabang of es_mpiexec to use bash instead of sh.
The best option, however, would be to use the current git master. It's fixed
there.
