EU software patent law under web attack

"American corporations have ulterior motives", claim

RED HAT and MySQL are backing a web campaign today against the European
Union software patent directives.

A web site, NoSoftwarePatents.com has been launched and will be in 12
languages. It claims that the EU directive, currently trucking its way
through the halls of the €urocracy, are being used for anti-competitive
purposes.

The site claims, according to spokesperson Florian Muller, that patents
on software: "Stifle innovation and cost the entire economy and society
dearly.

"There is only a small group of people in the patent system who would
benefit from them and some large American corporations have ulterior
motives".

Deutsche Bank, Price Waterhouse Coopers and the Kiel Institute for World
Economics have warned of the negative implioations of the directive,
added Muller. µ
