A killer for me is KVM - I've run this on kernels as old as 2.6.18, but
it didn't officially appear until 2.6.20. KVM is something that, for me,
it crucial.

Also, at the time of the Dapper release, kqemu was non-free software.
Because of the KVM inclusion, they released under GPL. This is a
critical application for my workloads.

I don't think shifting the release as a base is a good idea, however. I
personally think that a community maintained repo for additional
packages should be created. Unfortunatly, I realize that this also
requires manpower that I'm sure can't be spared. :(

Backporting new kernels, while quite useful, is also a huge task,
especially when the kernel is one of the central changes in gNewSense.
Could we be sure that we'd eliminate all non-free code in 4 concurrent
kernels? Are we even sure we've got it all out in our one kernel?
