Running

        sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel

gives no output (error or otherwise).

When i do

sudo modprobe -l '*hda*'

/lib/modules/2.6.24-32-generic/ubuntu/hwmon/hdaps_ec.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.24-32-generic/kernel/drivers/hwmon/hdaps.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.24-32-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-codec-intelhdmi.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.24-32-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-codec-realtek.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.24-32-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-codec.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.24-32-generic/ubuntu/sound/alsa-driver/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.24-32-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-codec-atihdmi.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.24-32-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-codec-hdmi.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.24-32-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-codec-nvhdmi.ko

I didn't figure out how to get the version of the modules so not sure if they are old or now.

Is the path to the packages that the Synaptic Package Manager displays different then the one used for installed binaries?

thanks
Sam

No errors that I can see. No sound after I reboot.
Looking at the "Synaptic Package Manager" I still see the alsa-base module with the old version (1.0.16 installed by gNewSense
installation).

Since the install seemed to work, shouldn't at least that version
have updated? Same thing happens for the alsa-lib and alsa-util, they
keep their original version numbers.

The package manager only sees packages, not binaries that are installed
separately.

There is an audio device return by "lspci -v".

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Unknown device 1e20 (rev
04) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Unknown device 841a
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 14
       Memory at f7310000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
       Capabilities: <access denied>

Any ideas what else I can try to get Sound working?

Try this and see if it gives you errors:

sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel
