on the calling computer pppd is started as soon as there is a CONNECT. The
result of this is that on the computer that is called the user is AutoPPP
(see your login.conf). Now, if your pap/chap-secrets files are ok you
should get a automatic login without a login prompt.

Last year I often got a looped back line too, this year I think it
happened only once or twice, I don't know why, I suspect it has something
to do with the set-up of your provider, but I'm not sure. As far as I
know, the V110 protocol is not used often, so it may take some time for
your provider to get all bugs out of it ;-)

I have a somewhat older set-up, no /dev/pts/8. If it works, leave it that
way. Can't help you with that.

OK, so we got a bit farther. Now after pppd is started on the called
computer your /var/log/messages there should read something like:

pppd[25068]: pppd 2.4.1 started by a_ppp, uid 0
pppd[25068]: Perms of /dev/ttyI8 are ok, no 'mesg n' neccesary.
pppd[25068]: using channel 147

Aug 22 19:20:28 mtack2 pppd[25068]: Script /etc/ppp/auth-up finished
             (pid 28648), status = 0x0

This will show if the chap challenge has success.
There may be some more lines about compression/deflation, name server etc.
and then it will have to end with

pppd[25068]: local IP address 192.168.1.2
pppd[25068]: remote IP address 192.168.1.4
pppd[25068]: Script /etc/ppp/ip-up started (pid 28651)

Which IP addresses you chose wil depend on your set-up. They should be put
in your pap/chap-secrets files and in /etc/hosts on both computers.

In /etc/ppp/ip-up I start for instance fetchmail and fetchnews, but there
is nothing special about that.

I hope this will be the next step ;-)
