Err, over here (.nz) the towers all have names, and the phone tells me 
what one I am using (on my phone, I think this enabled it: Menu -> 
Settings -> Phone settings -> Cell Info Display)
It is great for travelling through relativly flat cities, as it tells me 
the suburb I'm in.
