Assuming that this is infrared connection, when using FBUS mode, you
need connection = irda.

So, FBUS -> irda -> linux irda stack -> no FBUS on Mac OS X?
That's bad :-(

Could libusb help? if it is something to make usb communication independent from the OS, perhaps you may be able to overcome the Mac OS X irda limitations?
