I have just tried this with a ZTE 3g modem usb stick and this doesn't
work. Precisely I need to manually modprobe the usbserial module to
have it working. Perhaps debian stable needs something more...

Just FYI all you guys buying phones to handle SMSes, I've just tried a
3g modem usb stick and it works awesome with SMSes. See

It seems to me you can save lots of money and efforts using USB sticks
rather than full blown phones (disclaimer: haven't tested it for
extensive periods of time or under hard load or with any other device
out there).
