[Gnucap-devel] Google Summer of Code 2009

Hi guys --

Google has just announced they will run the Google Summer of Code
program again in 2009. They announced this year earlier than
previously; I suspect they want a longer period in which we can try to
get quality participants.

Some questions for you to ponder over the next few days:

* Should we (as the gEDA Project) do GSoC again this year?

* Assuming we do it, I don't mind being the main admin as I was last
year. However, who volunteers to be the back-up admin?

* Who volunteers to be a mentor? If you want to be a mentor, please
let me know, and also tell me what project you want to mentor (if it's
not obvious).

* The big question: money. Google gives the gEDA Project $500 for
each student we mentor. As admin, I am the one who is given the
dough. Last year I just forwarded the $500 to each mentor. There is
some overhead incurred because I ask mentors to submit invoices so I
can pass on the $$$ and let the mentors deal with the taxes.
(Otherwise, this shows up on my income, and I need to pay the taxes on
it.)

Assuming we go ahead and do GSoC in 2009, I propose to do something
different with the money: Sent the whole thing to the Linux Fund for
the PCB project. This has two benefits: 1. It transfers money to a
good cause which we all care about, and 2. It will get me out of the
business of doing money transfers. Any objections?

If we decide to go ahead with GSoC 2009, then our next step will be to
review and update our project lists, and then re-attach them to the
main gEDA web page.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Cheers,

Stuart
