Yes, prefix the word with `\%'.

    $ nroff
    .pl 4
    .ll 18n
    I I peculiar-looking
    .br
    I I \%peculiar-looking
    ^D
    I I peculiar‐look‐
    ing
    I                I
    peculiar‐looking
    $
