That depends entirely on the size of the core image, which in turn
depends on how many modules you (need to) build into it.  It's certainly
possible for the core image size to exceed the 50-sector mark.

Does GRUB2 check the position of the 1st partition (number of sectors before the 1st partition) in order to avoid writing on the 1st partition ?
