Agreed, this is a nice addition.

But $pkgdatadir is always ${datadir}/guile.  So, in my view, better to
rely on this and use AC_CONFIG_FILES, instead of introducing the sed
dependency and incantation in Makefile.am.

I'd vote for guile-1.8.pc now.
