This I do not know, since md5sum or sha256sum are not provided; gzip -t 
show the download archive is okay.

I'm following the instructions page for Debian 10.1 and use wget to pull 
the gnuhealth-latest.tar.gz

I use Midnight Commander to extract.  Each time I have tried, I've 
started fresh by spinning up a new VM.

I tried just a bit ago with the same failure errors.

Just a little bit about the vm.

Static ipv4 address
ipv6 disabled
all unnecessary software removed (including firewall and apparmor)
